Marty's Romans 8:1-4 Drawings - part two
Marty sent this great idea!

Hi guys,

I learned a great way to memorize scripture (thanks to Ann H) that helps me, especially when the language of the verse I’m memorizing doesn’t easily roll off my tongue (as I find with Romans 8 in the NIV.) The idea is, you put the words to pictures by drawing little cartoon cues for yourself.
The cartoons don’t have to make sense to anyone else but you. It’s a great first step to memorizing what seems like an insurmountable piece of scripture, because you first recite the verses using the pictures as cues and before long you realize you can do it without the pictures! I can still see them in my mind.

The process of drawing out serves my memorization in many ways:

1. It puts a visual in my mind so when I get stuck on what word comes next, I often can recall the order of the pictures I’ve drawn better than I can the order of the words alone.

2. I think you use a different part of your brain to draw than to read, so the memorization seeps in “deeper”

3. It’s more fun that memorizing by route.

4. By drawing, you spend more time in the word than you might if you were just sitting to memorize

5. In the process of choosing how to represent the word you are drawing visually, you often start to see many layers of meaning behind the words.

6. You can use it as a game, asking others to try to decipher what your pictures mean without showing them the passage of scripture. I do this with my kids and it often leads to much belly-laughter, as they interpret my pictures to be something entirely different, but through the game we end up having a great discussion about God’s word! They often end up memorizing it with me or wanting to draw their own version!

THANKS MARTY R!!!!!
